Indoor Carbon Dioxide Can Make Us Dumber And That Will Get Worse With Climate Change

But a new study presented at the 2019 American Geophysical Union conference demonstrates that perhaps carbon dioxide itself should be thought of as a pollutant, capable of slowly dulling our ability to think. The findings are included in a preprint online at EarthArXiv. In recent years, several studies have found a link between high carbon dioxide levels indoors and cognitive decline. When we’re indoors, the carbon dioxide we breathe out becomes concentrated, particularly if there’s a lot of people breathing and ventilation is slow....

Inside The Deadly Heart Of 1964 S Hurricane Cleo

In 1964, Popular Science reporter E.D. Fales Jr. wrote this feature story about the crew of Snowcloud One going into the eye of Cleo, only to find it was not calm but filled with 125 mph winds. The Ordeal Of Snowcloud One Cleo was a hurricane with a difference, they discovered, as they probed for its calm eye—and found only 125-m.p.h. winds WHEN hurricane hunter Snowcloud One took off last August from Guantanamo Bay airfield she looked too frail and slender for the ordeal ahead: a flight into the eye of one of the most vicious tropical storms in recent years—Hurricane Cleo....

Is Dr Oz Bad For Science

“The Dr. Oz Show” frequently focusses on essential health issues: the proper ways to eat, relax, exercise, and sleep, and how to maintain a healthy heart. Much of the advice Oz offers is sensible, and is rooted solidly in scientific literature. That is why the rest of what he does is so hard to understand. Oz is an experienced surgeon, yet almost daily he employs words that serious scientists shun, like “startling,” “breakthrough,” “radical,” “revolutionary,” and “miracle....

Is It Time To Embrace Tidal Turbines

As the weather report would show, there are plenty of days when the sun doesn’t shine and the wind doesn’t blow—meaning power generated from solar panels and wind turbines could stall, given all the challenges with long-term energy storage from renewables. As a result, many countries have stuck with fossil fuels, which they know are reliable. After all, it doesn’t have to be a nice day to burn coal or pump natural gas....

Japanese Robot Annoys People Until They Talk To It

The robot’s small body looks a bit like a stylized version of the Pixar lamp, a pedestal with a bendy column and an oblong face. In the middle of the face sits a single unblinking eye, so that Talking Ally can maintain eye contact with its person. A second, tucked-away camera tracks the human’s face. Servomotors and springs give the robot a surprising range of movement. Depending on where the human looked, Talking Ally could engage them in conversation about their focus....

Jibo Creator Cynthia Breazeal Is Building A Robot For Every Home

How did you get into robotics? The first time I really became aware of robots was when I saw Star Wars. I was 10 years old, and I was in the theater. Seeing R2-D2 and C-3PO—that was really the moment. I just fell in love with them. It seems like we should have seen a companion robot by now. Until recently, roboticists haven’t been focused on building robots for nontechnical people....

Latin American Environmentalists Face Unprecedented Violence In Defending Their Land

In 2008, Mexican activist Mariano Abarca was assaulted by employees of a Canadian mining company, Blackfire Exploration, at his home in Chicomuselo, a municipality in the state of Chiapas near Mexico’s border with Guatemala. The attack was presumably retribution for Abarca’s vocal opposition to the planned expansion of Blackfire’s nearby barite mine. In July 2009, after he had received multiple death threats, Abarca joined a delegation to the Canadian embassy in Mexico City, where he gave a speech describing how Blackfire used its workers as thugs....
