Golf’s governing bodies have rules in place to prevent equipment from lending too much help to a golfer’s game. For its latest M-series drivers, TaylorMade is actually manufacturing the clubs beyond the limits of the rules and then tweaking each individual club as it comes off the line so it can sneak under the restrictions. TaylorMade calls its new tech speed injection and it involves inserting epoxy through one or both of the small portholes in the club’s face to adjust its stiffness in specific ways....

Climate Change 2021: the Physical Science Basis, part of the IPCC’s sixth assessment cycle, provides a thorough update to the state of climate science since the IPCC’s fifth assessment in 2014. The assessment builds on the latest data to provide a snapshot of how much humans have shifted the climate since industrialization and what’s in store in the future. The new report has 234 authors, references more than 14,000 scientific papers, and was subjected to review from numerous climate experts and government officials....

Currently, parts of Antarctica are experiencing temperatures that hit over 70°F warmer than average, while parts of the Arctic hover around 50°F warmer than average. The massive 70 degree jump was spotted two miles above sea level at Concordia station, while records were shattered by about 27 degrees at even higher altitudes at Vostok station, both located in Antarctica. Typically, the Antarctic region rests at about minus 50 to minus 60°F at this time of year, which is the early fall season for the southernmost point of the world....

At roughly 62 miles (100 kilometers) in diameter, the Vredefort crater, located near the present-day city of Johannesburg, South Africa, is the largest and oldest-known impact crater on the planet. About 2 billion years ago, an impactor (most likely an asteroid) hurtled towards the Earth, forming the giant hole in the ground that was an estimated 111 to 186 miles wide (180 to 300 kilometers) soon after impact. A study published this week in the Journal of Geophysical Research found that the impactor may have been bigger than previously estimated....

Getting naloxone to the people and communities that need it most remains a challenge. According to new data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the amount of naloxone dispensed from retail pharmacies steadily increased from 2012 to 2018. However, pharmacies still only dispensed an average of one naloxone prescription for every 69 prescriptions for high-dose opioids, the report noted. The CDC recommends that naloxone be co-prescribed with high-dose opioids, due to the risk of overdose for patients receiving those prescriptions....

The movie opens with Jennifer Connelly teaching a biology class on bacteria. Right off that bat, something seems out of place for a laboratory, and that something is Connelly. With her role as an astrobiologist, Connelly joins the likes of Cary Grant in Bringing Up Baby and Denise Richards in The World Is Not Enough as a scientist way too attractive for her profession. That small point aside, though, the science hits the mark....

In October 2018 the FDA granted a Breakthrough Therapy designation to COMPASS Pathways for its use of psilocybin in addressing treatment-resistant depression (TRD). As the name suggests, this condition is defined by depressive symptoms that don’t improve with the use of two or more standard therapies. Also, in March 2019, the FDA approved a TRD nasal spray (designed to mimic the positive effects of the hallucinogenic ketamine) as the first new antidepressant in decades....

VW labels its EVs with the prefix “ID.” The only electric vehicle model from VW currently on the US market is the ID.4, which is a compact SUV. The new Aero sedan will sport a range of as much as 385 miles, and will roll on wheels that are designed to evoke turbines, the company said in a press release. Other design details include two light strips that begin at the front, near the VW logo, and wrap backwards, on either side, as well as honeycomb patterns on the front and rear....
